I am having Zometa once a month. Some people get it every 3 monthsa. it depends on your doctor and how progressive your bone mets is. Mine is in almost every vertebrae. Zometa has very few mild SE.... Feels like the flu or just achy for a day or two but Ibepofen (SP?) can help with that. There is a very very small percentage of patients that get some sort of jaw bone necrosis. But it is a very small percentage!
The pros difinately out way the pros! Especially for bone mets!

Thank you for telling me it will be ok.
I am a bit nervous.
I am going to be taking it as a preventative.
Susan it is an infusion. There are a few studies out that say that drugs like Zometa, bisphosphonates, may prevent bone mets and it also may prevent other mets because they have been finding the stem cells of mets in the bone.

Lori, how are you doing these days?

Gina-I had my first infusion as a preventative a few months ago,  I will be getting it every six months.
The only noticeable side effect for me which seems to be ongoing is incredible dry itchy eyes.
I also had some leg spasms with which I've had problems before and possibly could have been attributed to other medications.

I hope things went well today.

Gina (and anyone else on zometa),  I have my first 3 mos. apt. on 8/13 (next Thurs) and want to get in on the zometa party.  Gina, you mentioned being part of a study togeton it.  What do I have to do to get this??  Just curious and want to be proactive with whatever I can do.  Thanks for any information.  Lee

Lee, my onc is one of the investigators of the study.
It is only experimental now. In six months they will know if everyone should be doing this or not.
In order to get it now you have to get a bone density scan to see if you have had bone loss. I did from all the chemo i have had over the years. If you have a minimum of medium level bone loss you can get it.

BUT
I have to tell you - I feel just awful today.
It is sneaking up on me and as the day goes on the worst I feel.
I had to call my onc's nurse because I feel so bad.
I hope this goes away soon!

G- tomorrow the pain will subside...I promise!!! And the next treatment will be easier, and then easier. You will find the new normal with Zometa.
