Does anyone know what percentage of women go into mets without going through the lymph nodes?  In other words, in women who have mets what percentage have no lymph node involvement?

Very good question.  I also wonder if any researcher has ever looked at this.

Wow, I am sorry this question was missed.
Maybe I should combine this forum with another one so things don't get lost.

I do not know the answer to the question, but I do know you can get mets without lymph node involvement. There can be vascular invasion without lymphatic invasion.

This is why chemo is so important. It kills any stray cell that is floating around systemically.  It is our best shot of killing all the cells.

Melissa - very interesting question ... and I'm sure the answer is not a simple one.  We have some data from the oncotype DX test .. based on risk of recurrance from specific recurrance scores - but at this point of time that is relevant for early stage IDC (and ILC)  which is  ER+ with no node involvement.  I know that the oncotype DX test has been used with node postitive recently - and there's a trial (TAILORx) studing the intermediate recurrance scores.

Tough question which I think will vary based on what type of breast cancer and the specific pathology details.
