I thought we'd have to wait till December-----But its starting the end of August and it looks like it will be an exceptional season with very high caliber chefs.

Gina-  You may want to take a look at Jennifer Carrol since you are a Chef Ripert fan.

I wish they would take Jay Rayner from Masters instead of Toby Young for one of the judges.

I read the bios for the chefs and there are a few from the Bay Area, my neck of the woods.

count me in as another one with LOTS of cookbooks ...  I'm always buying more ...  $202 is amazing!!  You timed that sale at a great time ... there's lots of renewed interest in Julia Child and her cookbooks from the movie. I can't wait to go see it!

Wow!
I have an original with the cover and I had Julia sign it for me when I had lunch with her back in 2000.
I wonder what mine would go for? Although, they would have to pry it out of my cold dead hands to get it from me!!

Gina - Your copy does not have a price tag - it is irreplaceable ...   but if you choose to sell it, it would be worth big bucks!!!!!  I can still see that photo of you with Julia in my head without looking at the image ...  what a wonderful experience that must have been !

I really enjoyed watching Top Chef Masters ... and love HUBERT and Rick Bayless - I am so happy that dick-head Chirello did not win - what a jerk he was .. and what a huge ego ..  he's not a very nice person - which didn't ever come across on his show ...   goes to show just how much comes out about their true personality in a reality TV Show.

I loooooove Top Chef!  I am an addict and haven't missed one season yet.

The women:

Ashley ~I generally like her food and I think she has more talent than is being shown.  She may be a dark horse.

Jennifer ~ I like her because she is a strong, take charge kind of person, and her food always looks good.

Jesse ~ I think she's hanging on by a thread.  She makes too many mistakes, like wrong flavors, etc.

Robin ~ Haven't really formed an opinion on her yet.  I kind of like that there is an older female in the this crowd, though!

Laurine ~ Is she a contestant?  She just kind of fades into the background every episode.

Others are now gone......Preeti, Jennifer Z and Eve.

The men:

Mike ~ He complains more than my sick grandmother used to complain!  Geesh.  Get over yourself!  He just makes little digs at everyone all the time.  That part is really annoying.  Can you tell I don't really like this guy?  I think they have people like this on reality shows for the entertainment value, but in this case it has backfired for me.

The Brothers ~ Michael and Bryan ~ I love these guys!  I think it is kind of fun that they put family members on this time.  Plus, they are not bad to look at and you always need that.   I also love the food they put out every episode and wish I could taste it IRL.

Ron, Mattin, Hector and Ash ~ Haven't really decided about these guys too much.   Only that Ron seems to be out of his element.

Eli and Kevin ~  These guys work so well together, and seem to be the same guy!  I like them, though, and hope they also continue on for a while.

Did I forget anyone?  What does everyone else think?

P.S.  I loved watching TC Masters this summer, too, and was rooting for either Hubert or Rick to win.  They are both just so likeable!

I'm still getting used to who is who but I agree with you on the contestants.

Jennifer thinks highly of herself.
Jesse is the one with the lip ring right?  She knows what she's doing wrong but she keeps on making stupid mistakes.
I think Robin is skilled but not as much as some of the others.
Mike, the whiner - has got to go.  He thinks he has got it all goin on.
I like the two brothers but one has a little more attitude than the other.
Ron, now I remember who he is - don't think he is too skilled either.
I wanted Mattin to excel because his restaurant is close to me - now I'll have to try it - but I don't think he's that good either.
I do like Kevin and Eli.  I think one of them made a recipe (potato salad?) that I want to try.

I think Jennifer is as classically talented as Hung was in an earlier season.--Add to that she really knows how to delegate and orchestrate the kitchen which should stand her in very good stead for "restaurant wars"which normally has gotten the leader of the losing team sent home.

I would really like to see Jesse get her act together. Last season Ariane from New Jersey kept landing at the bottom and then suddenly started winning multiple challanges till she massacred the lamb at the farm challenge.

I like Kevin and think he'll go far this season.

Could also be like Tom said -the battle of the brothers

Eli--Well I don't know whether you gals have seen the clip or not--and I don't know if its just an editing thing but I'm finding it very cringe-worthy when he is berating Robin for playing the "cancer-card" saying something to the effect that it's an easy way to win a quick fire.---Very mean.

Gina--At the height of the ebay frenzy for MTAOFC your book could have garnered over a thousand if it was a first edition signed-- and not a book club edition.  Seems the action has died down now.  It would have been a good time to sell my Simca Beck books but they are buried somewhere in my shed.  LOL

That must have been an amazing lunch--what a memory to have.

Kevin's potato salad did look good--tried to find the recipe after the episode but no luck.

Muffy, it wasn't easy, but I found the recipe!  You obviously will have to get a recipe converter to downsize the recipe but here you go (when you do, please post it for me):

Mustard Potato Salad

mustard-potato-salad

Top Chef, Season 6, Episode 3, Elimination Challenge

Yield

Approximately 125

Ingredients

  • 50 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and small diced
  • 5 red onions, julienned
  • 2 heads celery, small diced
  • 2 dozen hard-boiled eggs, chopped
  • 1 gallon mayonnaise
  • 1 quart yellow mustard
  • 1 pint pickled relish
  • 1 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 quart sour cream
  • Salt and pepper

Directions

1. Boil potatoes and red onions in salted water until tender. Shock in ice bath and drain.

2. In a large bowl, mix potatoes, onion, celery, eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, relish, cider vinegar, and sour cream until potatoes cream together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

To Serve:

1. Spoon mustard potato salad onto plate.

2. Top with Kevin’s Georgia-Style Pork Shoulder.

Georgia Style Braised Pork Shoulder

Top Chef, Season 6, Episode 3, Elimination Challenge

Yield

Approximately 125 Servings

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless pork shoulders, sliced into 8-oz portions
  • 3 heads celery, diced
  • 12 onions, diced
  • 5 jumbo carrots, diced
  • 1 quart yellow mustard
  • 1 quart cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons cayenne pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 gallons water
  • Salt

Directions

1. Season pork shoulders with salt and pepper. Sear in a large pot with oil until deep brown. Transfer pork shoulders to a roasting pan to collect meat juices.

2. Caramelize vegetables in the same pot until deep golden. Place pork shoulders back on top of vegetables and add in remaining ingredients. Mix well and cover.

3. Braise covered for about 2 ½ hours until very tender. Remove pork from braising liquid and shred.

To Serve:

1. Spoon Eli’s Mustard Potato Salad onto plate.

2. Top with shredded pork shoulder.

Kudos to you---You are a recipe sleuth extraordinaire!
I'm terrible at converting but I'll give it a try.
Knowing that there is cider vinegar and sour cream in the recipe is a good place to start experimenting.
Thanks for coming up with this

These are the measurements I'm coming up with for 6 servings

2.4 lb russet potatoes
.24 red onion
celery wouldn't compute but I'm figuring 1/2 stalk or a little more
1- 1/4 hard boiled egg
6.14 ounces mayo
1.54 ounces yellow mustard ( about 3 Tablespoons)
.77 pickled relish (about 1-1/2 Tablespoons)
.38 ounce cider vinegar (1-1/2 teaspoons)
1.54 ounces sour creme (about 3 Tablespoons)
Salt and pepper

Does this sound in the ballpark?

Wow, this sounds so much like the recipe I have for my mom's potato salad!  Same ingredients, anyway.  So cool that you found it!  Also, thanks for posting the pork shoulder recipe, too.

Muffy, I totally missed Eli saying those ridiculous things about Robin!  I agree....very mean!  Sometimes I do other things while watching TV, so it is very likely I was otherwise occupied when he was shooting off at the mouth. It is very obvious he has not dealt with health issues personally or he would not be saying anything remotely bad about her cancer.  Just kind of his ignorance coming out.   His Top Chef stock just went down a bit for me.......it's too bad because, as I said, I did like him.

It's like my potato salad too except I don't boil the onions with the potatoes and I use regular onions.  I sort of copied this one tonight and my son looked at it and went yck - because I put more mustard in it than I normally do. I don't use cider vinegar but I use pickle juice to mix with the mayo, mustard and sour cream.

I must have missed Eli saying those things too but that would disappoint me.

Wondering if Jessie makes it through the quickfire tonight.  I see she is noticeably absent in the previews for tonight's episode.
