Helloooo Nurse Nicki!

When I was doing chemo, I developed really awful heartburn, to the point I couldn't eat.  That was resolved, but now I find that food gets stuck in my throat when I eat and I tend to get reflux at night.  When I take my meds and vitamins in the morning, they also get stuck and it takes hours before they finally go down.  It always seems to hang up in the same place.  Should I be concerned?  Of course my mind goes right to cancer and I'm convinced I have a tumor in my esophogus!  This doesn't happen every single time, but more so if I eat too fast and don't chew up my food really well.

Thanks Nicki!
Jan

Same thing here jan and lord knows I have been scanned from head to toe.  I thought mine was from the surgery cause I had a tough time.  My voice didnt come back totally right for about 6 months.  They sent me for several different things and finally said the tube down my throat stressed me and it would take time.  I guess they were right cause it went away.  Anyway, I take prilosec now, perscription.

Will be interesting to see what nurse nicki says.

Two years ago during a routine endoscope a stricture (tightening) in my esphogus was found.  I was checked again earlier this summer and it's still the same.  I never knew it was there and didn't have any problems with it until I started chemo treatments.  Any meat or large bites of food or my meds feel like they get stuck.  Then I panic because I feel like I'm choking but I'm not.  I've given up all stringy meats (chicken, pork, steak, etc.), take very small bites and cut my larger pills in half now.  I'm waiting till the chemo is over to have it checked again and I'm going to see what it takes to have it corrected then.

Amy, I was talking to one of our patients today, and she had the same symptoms as me.  she said it was a hiatal hernia.  She has also been taking prilosec and it helped her.  I think I need to get my butt to the doc!

Wow Bev.  I thought it was just me.  It feels like everything gets stuck.  I start to hiccup and it is painful.

Janny:  Sorry I havent gotten to you sooner, but in a way it helped me narrow down what you were trying to ask.  Sounds like either GERD or hiatal hernia.  Gastric Esophageal Reflux Disorder.  Things  in the stomach come up and give you indigestion.

Hiatal Hernia will cause similiar symtoms.  Believe it or not the treatment is the same for both.  Nexium, Protonix, Prevacid are good medications.  Over the counter there is zantac and prilosec.

Also, constipation will cause the same problems.

Oh great, Nicki, I am terminally constipated!!  LOL!  I took some Zantac last night, and it was a little better, so I'm thinking you are right!   I think I will still get my butt to the Dr. and get it checked out.  Thank you so much!

Janny:  Definitely see the doctor.  If your constipated there is nowhere for the digested food to go.  Instead of going down it will go up.  Keep some tums around as they are good for quick relief.  You can get some Calcium too.

Please let us know what the doctor says.

Nicki, I'm sure this is TMI, but... When I had that awful diarrhea a few weeks ago, I swear I didn't go again for a week.  It's a standing joke in our house that I hold on to every last bit of fat and calories in everything I eat.  I am really terminally constipated!!!  I swear that's why I can't lose weight.  But, you are right.  I need to go to the doctor.  I only hang back cause I never went back to have  my C-reactive protein double checked and she will yell at me.  *hangs head*  I will go, I promise!
