Hi Nurse Nicki!
I cut my thumb pretty badly over the weekend.  I already have very slight LE.  Will that make it worse?  I am terrified that I will wake up and my arm will be huge!  I have been wearing my sleeve and trying to keep it elevated.  Do you need to get an infection to get LE or just a cut?
Thanks Nicki!
Jan

Hi Jan:  I'm not a nurse - but I have LE too...  the cut may or may not make your LE worse -  are you aware of the risk of infection (cellulitis ??) due to your lymphedema ??  Watch the area for redness,  streaking redness going up your arm - and for a fever ...  if you see redness mark the outline of it with permanent marker (it will come off easily with rubbing alcohol) - if the redness is increasing and moving beyond the borders you'll want to see a doctor - and will most likely need to be put on antibiotics.  An infection can get very serious very quickly with LE ..   I know of many who have been hospitalized and put on IV antibiotics.

You don't have to get an infection or a cut to get LE or to make LE worse - trauma, lifting,  straining,  overuse of your arm,  bug bite, etc can all cause or contribute to LE.

Good Morning:  I'm sorry cause you caught me with a health issue I know little about - yet I should know alot about it.  Im gonna have to do some research and maybe we can teach each other.

Binny on bc.org is an expert at lymphedema.  She has been supportive to many who have developed it.   Anyways - see ya later.  Will try to come back with a good answer.

Two weeks ago I was cooking and barely cut my thumb on the cutter on the wax paper box..............it bled and I rinsed it but went right back to rubbing spices in chicken!!!!...............4 days later I woke up with fever, red swollen arm................my oncologist sent me right to the hospital for 2 different IV antibiotics...........I stayed 2 days and finished my oral antibiotic yesterday............can not believe how fast this happened.  I have very mild lymphedema.................now I am really worried about doing anything to provoke that again......so be careful everyone.......................

That was one scary story.

I dont believe health care professionals take us seriously when it comes to lymphedema.

You need to check out Binny on bc.org - she is the expert in this area!  Can give out lots of advice.

Thanks Nicki!
My thumb has healed with no ill effects.  I am usually so careful not to aggrevate my arm.  Looks like I dodged the bullet this time!
