I am on herceptin only and just had my 22nd treatment. My white cells have been lower the last few weeks.

they were low on 2/13 and 3/6. I had a sinus infection that I took antibiotics for from 1/30 to 2/3. I then had an ear infection and I took medication from 2/20 to 3/1.

My current white cell count is 2.5 and my bacteria fighting part is .9.  They said it isn't going down and is stable, but it isn't normal either. So far, the doctor believes it is just due to the herception since my platelets and other tests look fine.

Is there anything I can try to get it up? And, should I be worried at this point?

this is what I found on herceptin.com:

The most common side effects associated with Herceptin were fever, nausea, vomiting, infusion reactions, diarrhea, infections, increased cough, headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, rash, low white and red blood cells, and muscle pain.

So, I guess at this point, I should just go with that and not worry!

My next big issue is next week. I have to do a repeat of the thyroglobulin to see if my thyroid issues have resolved. Hopefully it comes back under .2. Last year it was 9 and I had repeat the radioactive iodine. Not in the mood for that again!

Sam,
I have no good idea about the blood counts but I do have a question.
I read in the past about radioactive iodine ablation and a possible bc link.
I had the radioactive stuff for overactive thyroid.
4 yrs later I have bc. Obviously you had it and you have bc. Did you get cancer before or after the treatment? My guess is after!?

I'm not sure if I myself would trust/want another radioactive treatment, just want to give a word of caution and wonder about other possibilities out there....(not sure if surgery is fun - funner?)
Maybe Constantine can give a word of wisdom?

Hard to say. I had the breast cancer first and then the thyroid and then breast cancer again. So, hard to know what the link is.

So far, my doctors have just said that any type of cancer automatically raises your risk for other types.

But, I think since they are both hormonally related, there has to be some connection.

Different hormones (estrogen vs. thyroid hormone), but my doctor tells me that hormones rule the world!

Oh, I see,
I thought for a second thyroid is also estrogen induced

(I had a biopsy today, on my back. 50/50 for some sort of skin cancer.
I doubt it though, I had a derm dr look at it last year and he said it's a dry spot to just put lotion on it....but...the fun never ends!)

Best wishes!!!

Calico-how did the biopsy go?

I find it funny that my white cells are low, but yet I am not getting sick. Everyone I work with and everyone else I talk to has been sick, sick sick!

Sam,
how are you?

Thanks for asking,
I just called my case manager to look and I am all clear (waiting for the doc to call takes wayyy longer). I am very happy not to have skin cancer.
When my whites where 2500, I didn't get sick either, ate salats and fruits too, which I guess I shouldn't have but I was fine.

that is awesome! Great news!

I am just laughing that I should be worrying about possibly getting sick and all those around me with "normal" immune systems are the sickies!

I hear you...I used to joke "I never get sick"...(with anything, stomach flu, viruses, colds)..except cancer....

Good for you! Hope you stay well and the whites will go up!
(I am not sure if you are able to do some walking, I feel that it helped me with staying healthy, fresh air and the movement.....kept me sane too   )
