Nicki, I have a nurse question - I'll post it on Gina's site too later but my sister went to the dr. earlier this week because she had a pain in her stomach that caused her to double over.  He sent her to a surgeon thinking it was a hernia.  The surgeon told her she had a rectus sheath hematoma - a torn muscle that was bleeding.  You can see it protruding from her stomach.  She had to go back today because she is in so much pain so they ordered a CT scan for her Monday morning.  Of course, having had cancer before, she's concerned that there is a tumor there.  What do you think?

Margo:  I had to look this one up.  Very rare although it happens more frequently in women than men.  If she has rectus sheath hematoma, it is one of the most disdiagnosed causes for an acute abdomen.

This is a pretty good article on it.  I read several sites and no where did I find the cause to be related to a tumor or any kind of cancer.  More trauma be it from the outside or coughing too hard.

Nicki, thanks, I read the article and will forward it to my sister.  Coincidentally, this happened when she was playing golf.

Nicki, now she has another problem.  She's still not better and went to the dr. today.  They tried to draw blood and send her in for her CT scan.  Well, apparently they injected her with the dye and her forearm is almost twice the size of her other arm and it's numb.  The dr. thinks maybe another hematoma is growing???  He gave her some Claritin and she said it seems to be reducing the swelling.  Any ideas of what's going on?  I was thinking maybe lymphedema.

Margo:  Sounds to me like they missed the vein and injected the dye into the tissue around the vein?  The Claritan has me confused - maybe the doctor thinks she is having an allergic reaction.  And of course you can never leave the lymphedema out of the picture.

I dont like the sounds of this.  Who is leading her care?  PCP, Onc, or surgeon?

Nicki
