Lori, hi there my friend.
I am so sorry you are going through so much.
I can only imagine how scared you are and how sick of everything you must be.

I don't have personal experience with GK but from what I know of people who have had it, headache is the biggest complaint. You have to be on decadron so that can make the headache worse. But the decadron prevents swelling and helps you overcome the s/e's of the GK.

I do know that when it is over, you recover fairly quickly.

I will be praying for you.

Love you
g

Hi, Lori,

I had gamma knife in January of this year, and it was way less than I had expected.  I wrote a lot on the experience on bc.org, that maybe you saw there.  I only had one lesion, so that's part of why my experience was less traumatic.  Basically, I went in early, got an iv with happy juice, then had the frame attached with four screws.  They use a little local anesthesia at each site, so it's not really painful, just pressure.

Then, with the frame attached, I got new MRI's that were used for the "planning" where the computer calculates the angle of the beam, the time, etc.  Wait, wait, and I tried to have lunch but it was a little difficult with the frame on.  Sitting in the waiting room with two other women, also in head frames.  When I got called in, they said it would take 17 minutes in the machine.  It's a very open machine, like an MRI but not nearly so closed in feeling.  I had a cd, and I figured it would take five songs.  The sound quality is great because the machine is quiet and the speakers are inside.  I listened to the music, danced with my feet, while my head was held totally stationary.

The worst part was the feeling of the weight of my head on the two screws at the base of the frame.  It would be great if they could manage to do something about that.

Getting the frame off was weird, but not painful.  It's just a couple of turns of the screws (I reminded her - lefty loosy) and it's off.  You feel a sort of pressure as it equilibrates when the screws come off.

The doctor ordered decadron but I asked if I could try it without, and he agreed since I had only the one lesion.  I had been taking boswellia and I upped the dose.  I never had any headaches or side effects, and went on vacation two days later.
